Girls'Day at HLL
Sensors for the Invisible – When Research Becomes Tangible
Ten schoolgirls from the greater Munich area got to know a very special place at this year's Girls'Day, 23rd of April 2026: the Semiconductor Laboratory of the Max Planck Society in Garching. Normally, the laboratory is only accessible to scientists, but once a year it opens its doors to young women who want to take an authentic look behind the scenes of cutting-edge research
After an introduction to the theory and applications of sensor technology, the participants got hands-on: each student assembled her own small detector system, tested it, and was able to take it home at the end of the day. The detectors are capable of reliably measuring even low levels of radiation.
For the Semiconductor Laboratory, Girls'Day is more than just a one-day initiative. In an industry where women remain underrepresented in technical and scientific professions, the HLL is making a deliberate statement. The goal is to inspire young women to pursue STEM careers at an early stage and to show them that physics, engineering, and research are fields where they are not only welcome, but urgently needed. Perhaps one of them will one day work in science herself and help develop the technologies of tomorrow.
